The Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology (FWE) and the Land Information and ComputerGraphics Facility (LICGF) are seeking a research assistant to assist with the development andevaluation of tools and models to assess fine-scale habitat impacts of land use change. Tounderstand the impacts of land use choices at the scale of an individual farm, we need to designand evaluate a basic habitat schema that can be used to quantify habitat impacts of land coverchanges. We will develop a simple habitat classification system, develop GIS-based tools fordelineating land use “patches” based on image interpretation, develop metrics based on theclassification to characterize land use change, and then evaluate how well these metricscorrespond with potential impacts on wildlife habitat as determined by modeling and fieldobservations.
This is a1/2-time Research Assistantship, starting in March 2010, for two years. The RA will beresponsible for GIS data acquisition and management, programming (or adapting) an interfacefor patch delineation, and programming habitat evaluation metrics. The RA will assist withevaluation of the metrics and conduct field verification studies. Good GIS skills are required;familiarity with one or more programming tools such as Java or Visual Basic will be useful.Good project management and writing skills are necessary. Familiarity with Wisconsinlandscapes and wildlife habitat will be helpful.
Applications should include a cover letter describing interests and relevant experience, currentCV or résumé, and names and contact information of three references.
Applications should be emailed as a single .pdf file to Steve Ventura, Director, LICGF Director,(sventura@wisc.edu) by January 20, 2010. Please include “Habitat Modeling RA” in the subjectline.
