The UW Division of Facilities Planning and Management’s plans to convert the Charter StreetHeat and Power Plant to boilers that can burn a combination of natural gas and biomass in thenear future. The site is constrained to no more than a few days of biomass fuel supply, and sooperations will require sophisticated staging of combustible materials from suppliers, processors,and storage facilities. The Land Information and Computer Graphics Facility (LICGF) hasprovided initial support for spatial analysis of fuel sources and possible locations for processingand aggregation centers. During the spring semester, we will continue to provide support foranalysis of the supply chain logistics. This could include
– linkage and integration with detailed fuel source analyses, and tools to estimate availablefuel supplies around specified sites;
– interactive tools for estimating transportation and handling costs associated with specifiedlocations and transportation modes;
– evaluation of storage capacity requirements and supply chain logistics.

We are seeking a 1/2-time project assistant for the spring semester to help support these analyses.Duties will include acquiring, integrating, and analyzing fuel source, facility, and transportationrelated data, developing tools for interactive use of these data, and assisting with logisticsmodeling. The incumbent will have experience with ArcGIS version 9.x and web development.Experience with mapping application programming interfaces (APIs), scripting languages, andprogramming languages (e.g., Java or VisualBasic) will be helpful.
