Assistant Professor of Environmental Science (Tenure Track)
Starting Date: September 1, 2010
Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Environmental Science or related discipline with an emphasis in Watershed Sciences. Preference will be given to candidates with a documented record of excellence in teaching, a research focus in water resources or stream ecosystem management, expertise in environmental mapping/GIS, and field station management experience.
Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be expected to teach introductory and advanced courses in environmental science, engage in curriculum development and assessment, advise students, and manage the university’s 60-acre field station. The standard teaching load in the Division of Natural and Health Sciences is 12 credits per semester (typically four courses and three labs per year plus supervision of student research). The successful candidate will also be expected to engage in undergraduate research that includes utilizing the resources of the university’s field station. Greene Field Station management responsibilities include maintenance of information and GIS databases, management of the properties’ physical resources and budget, coordination of field station grant-based projects, and support of community partnerships.
Rank and Salary:
Assistant Professor. This position is eligible for tenure. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications.
The Program:
The Environmental Science Program is housed within the Division of Natural and Health Sciences. This interdisciplinary program supports environmental science, biology, and chemistry majors plus the University’s general education program. Full-time faculty members include a botanist, physical geographer, analytical chemist, and behavioral ecologist who have received grant support from NSF, NASA, and other sources. Students and faculty in the environmental science program have also been active in study abroad programs, internships, field and laboratory research, and community outreach.
The Greene Field Station is composed of two tracts of property: The Howard T. Greene Scientific Study and Conservancy Area and the Genesee Creek Research Area, both located in Genesee Depot, Town of Genesee, Waukesha County, approximately 10 miles from the Carroll University campus. The properties are linked by Genesee Creek, one of the few trout streams in southeastern Wisconsin. A variety of stream and riparian habitat restoration projects are on-going following a dam removal in 2005. The faculty are also collaborating on projects investigating the impact of terrestrial invasives on an aquatic system.
The Division:
The Division of Natural and Health Sciences includes programs in biology, chemistry, environmental science, mathematics, physics and psychology in the Natural Sciences Area and programs in athletic training, exercise science, health sciences, nursing, physical and health education, physical therapy, and recreation management in the Health Sciences Area. The Division of Natural and Health Sciences has received federal and private foundation grant awards. Divisional faculty also have led study abroad programs. The Division has a strong staff of support personnel and laboratory coordinators.

Founded in 1846, Carroll University is an independent, co-educational comprehensive college grounded in the liberal arts tradition. Carroll University is located in suburban Waukesha, 16 miles west of Milwaukee and 60 miles east of Madison. The University serves approximately 2500 full-time and 800 part-time students. The University though intentionally ecumenical and non-sectarian in approach, is related to the Presbyterian Church, USA.
