FOREST ECOLOGIST/BOTANIST:
(full-time, permanent) for the Great Lakes Indian Fish andWildlife Commission (GLIFWC) located on the Bad River Indian Reservation in Odanah, Wisconsin.GLIFWC serves 11 Ojibwe Tribes in the implementation and management of treaty harvesting rights.GLIFWC’s Biological Services Division staffs biologists with expertise in fisheries, wildlife, wild plant,and environmental issues.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the supervision of the Wildlife Section Leader, the ForestEcologist/Botanist will provide technical assistance and sound scientific advice to member tribesregarding management, protection, and enhancement of wild plants and their communities in the cededterritories of Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota. The Forest Ecologist/Botanist will serve as a liaisonwith the US Forest Service (USFS) and Wisconsin DNR (WDNR); work on tasks assigned to TechnicalWorking Groups and Committees established with these agencies; and review and develop comments onUSFS and WDNR forest management plans and select projects. As appropriate, the ForestEcologist/Botanist will explore expanding relationships with DNR’s in Michigan and Minnesota andwith Wisconsin county forests, and develop tribal wild plant harvest regulations and permit systems asrequired. The Forest Ecologist/Botanist will monitor and report the harvest of wild plant resources asrequired, serve as the lead staff person in an on-going study to assess the effects of logging on understoryplants, and perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Masters degree (at a minimum) in botany, forest ecology, or related fieldrequired. Demonstrated knowledge of plant species and habitats of the Upper Great Lakes Regionrequired. Demonstrated skill in written and oral communication, and with computer spreadsheet andword processing software required. Demonstrated ability to work both independently and in closecooperation with others. Experience with statistics, data analysis, and data/statistical analysis softwarelike SAS or R preferred. Experience in forestry and land management practices preferred. Experiencewith GIS and working with tribal communities preferred. Must have valid driver’s license and beinsurable. Indian Preference will be applied consistent with GLIFWC policies and the federal Indian SelfDetermination and Education Assistance Act (PL 93-638).

SALARY:
The starting salary range for this position is $30,367 – $35,873 depending upon experienceand qualifications. GLIFWC offers a full range of fringe benefits including health insurance andretirement.
