Degree and area of specialization:
B.S. in computer science or related field; masters preferred.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Recent experience in a research computer environment advising the supporting research activities. Person must have considerable problem-solving ability and be able to function in a constantly changing research environment.

Principal duties:
The University of Wisconsin Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC) is a research and development center with an international reputation for developing instrumentation for both terrestrial and space flight applications. SSEC’s mission includes the support of faculty and academic staff led research, development, fabrication, and implementation of space flight experiments, as well as the development of new meteorological research tools for national and international use.

This position is located in the SSEC Geospacial Information Sciences operational area. The successful candidate will:

Provide support and advice to faculty, staff and students who use Geospacial Information Sciences (GIS) data and/or remote sensing applications in their research and activities. 25%

Design and manage GIS data archives, their development, organization, computer processing and innovative access options including download, streaming and display. Write scripts and documentation for management of the archives. 50%

Promote use and integration of these archives across disciplines and among faculty, staff, students, state agencies and the general public through short courses and workshops explaining the data, the technology, and computer applications. Assist in the development and testing of new computer programs and applications. 25%

A criminal background check will be conducted prior to hiring.

A period of evaluation will be required.
