Dr. Rissman is seeking a qualified research intern to support research on the social and ecological outcomes of protected area conservation and management. The selected candidate should have experience with ESRI’s ArcGIS software, database management, and land conservation. The experience gained as a Research Intern will benefit the selected candidate through improving knowledge of interdisciplinary and spatial research methods. The position will be 75-100% time, from Spring 2010 through August 2011. Depending on candidate performance, the position is expected to continue for at least 15 months with the possibility of extension depending on funding availability. Pay is commensurate with experience; health insurance is provided.
Primary duties:
-Help compile a GIS database for protected areas research.-Analyze GIS data in support of research projects.-Provide GIS, database, and administrative support for an interdisciplinary research project on the effects of climate change on conservation easements and conservation strategies involving six universities and two nonprofit organizations.-Provide general support for research activities.
Necessary and Desired Qualifications:
-Must have graduated from a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in a related field within the past 12 months.-Must be a proficient ArcGIS user including experience with digitizing and database management.-Must have a valid driver’s license.-Experience with statistical analysis, research design, land conservation,climate change, public policy, real estate, and/or planning and zoning isdesired.-Must be able to work independently, with high attention to detail andstrong positive communication skills.
