Degree and area of specialization:
Minimum B.A. in sociology, geography or related filed; certificate or Masters in Geographic Information Systems strongly preferred.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
The applicant should have 1-2 years of extensive experience with ArcGIS software and the application of GIS in the visualization and analysis of population, health and environmental data. Also requires extensive knowledge of U.S. Census data and the Census Bureau’s TIGER digital map. The applicant must have at least 1 year of professional experience with the use of geospatial analytic techniques. The applicant must also have working knowledge of population estimation and forecasting methods and techniques.

Principal duties:
1. Provide support to UW Applied Population Laboratory (APL) projects in the areas of data analysis and visualization using ArcGIS, geocoding engines, geospatial tools, and spatial analysis. (30%)
2. Provide support in the APL in the analysis of social science and public health data, including: U.S. Census data; other large demographic data sets; and health, patient or vital statistics datasets provided by public health or health provision agencies. (30%)
3. Provide assistance to the School District Enrollment Projection program within the APL including: creation of models for school enrollment projections; written reports of findings and implications; presentation of data and findings to school boards, professional and professional associations, and community organizations. (25%)
4. Work on long term projects within the APL requiring data acquisition, data analysis, and data presentation. Assist in providing data, analytical and outreach support to faculty, staff and students in the APL as well as clientele of the APL. Assist in authoring manuscripts and reports. (15%)
