The Information Technology Department is currently seeking a candidate with excellent communication and customer service skills to assist in the management and coordination of the City’s geographic information computer system (GIS).
The GIS Analyst will be responsible for the following:
- Designing, developing and implementing applications for accessing, analyzing and maintaining spatial data, based on the analysis of user/departmental requirements.
- Providing technical expertise for GIS system hardware and software.
- Monitoring system performance, assisting with hardware and software configuration issues and installing and maintaining software.
- Assisting in GIS system administration and database administration of spatial databases, documenting system and database parameters and guidelines, and performing any troubleshooting activities regarding the database operation.
- Designing and implementing spatial databases for department-identified GIS applications.
- Helping departments define their specific GIS needs including consulting with users regarding programs and procedures for data collection methods.
- Coordinating, monitoring and evaluating the performance of outside consultants involved in implementing the GIS system for the city.
The candidate selected for this position will have excellent skills in coordinating operations with others, communicating effectively in both technical and non-technical terms, and in preparing concise written and verbal reports. Extensive knowledge of developing custom GIS tools and database design, development, and management is key to the success in this role. Additionally, extensive knowledge of geographic information system theory and practices and experience with various GIS software packages (including ESRI products) and hardware configurations is necessary. Knowledge of relational databases, programming languages (VB.NET or C#) and Windows as well as other operating systems is highly recommended.
Requirements for this position include a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Geography, or related field, plus three to five years experience in computer programming, computer mapping (with ESRI products), database design and management. A valid Illinois Class D Driver’s License is also required.
