Degree and area of specialization:
B.S. Degree in Geography with specialization in GIS and/or Computer Science
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
One year relevant work experience or equivalent education experience with LINUX, Apple and Microsoft operating systems image processing software specifically ENVI and Erdas Imagine programming languages, specifically IDL and Python HTML and CSS image classification techniques, spectral mixture analysis
Principal duties:
This position will utilize various software and hardware tools to process and interpret remotely sensed airborne and satellite imagery, as well as other spatial data. This Research Specialist will apply his/her knowledge of geospatial technologies to develop methods for, and automate the process of, mapping forest change.
40% Data Management & Analysis
* acquire, process, and manage geospatial data for multiple research projects
* assist with development of remote sensing monitoring techniques
* workflow development and refinement
* development of mapping methods
30% Programming
* write scripts and programs to process large volumes of geospatial data
* design and implement a web-based interface for publishing and delivering research materials and data via the internet
* create and manage system for entering and accessing metadata
20% Documentation
* write summaries of image processing procedures and data
* document data-relevant information via metadata management system
10% Support
* installation and maintenance of GIS, remote sensing, and statistical software
* provide technical support for hardware and software
* assist with research-related fieldwork as needed
*Other duties as needed
