Job Summary:
The Geographical Information Systems and Sciences (GIS) Specialist reports to the Director of Social Science Computing Services and is responsible for managing GIS/spatial analysis tasks, GIS instruction and GIS data management, and providing GIS software support and integration. Duties include providing technical/analytical knowledge regarding GIS to research teams; training people in using GIS applications/methods, spatial analysis, and data presentation (maps); developing custom applications/interfaces for GIS data retrieval and analysis; teaching regular courses in the campus’ GIS curriculum; and installing and maintaining GIS software, add-ons and modules.

Education:
Graduate degree (Masters and/or PhD) in Geography, GIS, Computer Sciences, or related field or undergraduate degree in Geography with a graduate degree (Masters and/or PhD) in the social sciences or related field required.

Experience:
At least three years of job experience in Geographical Information Systems and Sciences required.At least two years of experience teaching/training Geographical Information Systems and Sciences proficiency required.

Experience working in an academic or non-for-profit research environment preferred.Experience working with social science and/or population based research preferred. Experience with web mapping applications/platforms such as ArcGIS Server, MapServer, GeoServer, etc. preferred.Experience with geodatabase formats, ArcSDE, and/or various database platforms (Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, etc.) preferred.Experience with one or more GIS software packages other than ESRI products (MapInfo, Intergraph, GRASS, QGIS, etc.) preferred.

Competencies:
Proficiency with ESRI suite of software products (ArcGIS, ArcGIS Server, ArcSDE, etc.) required.Interest in education and research uses of GIS required.

Fluency in various scripting languages and/or tools such as: SQL, Python, .NET, Javascript, ArcGIS Model Builder, etc. preferred.Ability to troubleshoot GIS problems stemming from hardware or software preferred.Grant writing interest and ability preferred.
