Full time over summer and during semester breaks; 10 – 20 hours per week during school year (5 positions) Applicant must be a current student.

Five positions will be filled:

  • Two positions for georeferencing topographic maps
  • Two positions for metadata entry and verification
  • One position for documenting and posting historical mapping standards

The applicant will assist to batch process scanned USGS maps to georeference GeoTIFF image files and/or validate metadata using an existing citation database of USGS topographic maps. The maps are throughout the U.S., are at various scales and date back to the early 1880s. Students will be expected to work independently. Schedule is somewhat flexible.

A knowledge of geography or cartography is strongly preferred but not required. Good organizational skills, attention to detail, quality control and an ability to operate a computer are critical. Knowledge of Microsoft Windows operating system is required. Experience working with on-line data entry interfaces is desirable. Position will continue through 2011 – 2012 school year.

Work will be performed for the U. S. Geological Survey, 465 Science Drive, Madison, WI, 53711. The office is on the Madison Metro bus route from Campus.
