A probationary tenure-track faculty position is available beginning August 22, 2011, in the Department of Geography and Anthropology at the rank of Assistant Professor with an emphasis in Human-Environment Geography who uses Geospatial Technology.  This position is funded by the Blugold Commitment, a student-initiated tuition increase designed to enhance the distinctive, high-quality UW-Eau Claire experience. 

Responsibilities

  • Applicants will be expected to teach courses in the Department of Geography and Anthropology including introductory and advanced courses in human-environment geography, remote sensing, and GIS, as well as field-based and other courses in areas of specialization.
  • Applicants should be committed to incorporating undergraduates into their research agenda and the pursuit of interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who can support the interdisciplinary mission of the university’s new Watershed Institute for Collaborative Environmental Studies and actively promote the department’s central role in the institute and in liberal education at UW-Eau Claire.
  • The ability to bring diverse and inclusive experiences, pedagogies, and research to the department and broader campus community, the capacity to mentor first generation and underrepresented students, and the willingness to provide public service to our state and local community, are also highly valued.  
  • Other faculty duties include participating in research and scholarly/creative activities, providing academic advising to students as assigned, engaging in service to the university and community, and participating in department, college, and university committee work.  

Qualifications

  • We seek a human-environment geographer who uses geospatial technology, including remote sensing and GIS, as an analytical tool in their scholarly activity.
  • The successful candidate must be able to teach introductory and advanced courses in geospatial techniques, in addition to applied geospatial techniques and human-environment courses based on her or his specialty.
  • Applicants must be committed to teaching and learning, including student-faculty research collaboration.
  • Applicants are required to hold a PhD in Geography from an accredited higher education institution. 
  • Preference will be given to those who have a PhD (or will have one by August 22, 2011). ABDs will be considered but must complete all PhD requirements by October 15, 2011.
  • Expertise with industry-standard remote sensing (e.g. ENVI, ERDAS) and ESRI software is required.
