Job Description:
Two field research technicians (one lead and one assistant) needed for a study of the ecology of the American Badger in Wisconsin, the Badger state. This project starts June 6, 2011 and will extend to late summer or early fall. The study will involve basic field ecology, including capture, radio-tagging, and tracking of badgers and locating den sites to assess habitat and landscape use and movements (45%), coordinating with the public and government agencies to collect carcasses for data on diet and demographic parameters (25%). Coordinate field data collection with an ongoing project on the genetic structure of badgers in Wisconsin being conducted by UW-Milwaukee (10%). Create and manage computer databases, including GIS databases of badger den locations and movements (20%). The primary study area will be in southwest Wisconsin, with a possible comparison area in the northwestern part of the state.
Knowledge Required:
B.S. in wildlife ecology or related field required for the lead technician position. Some field experience with mammalian ecology, trapping, and radio telemetry strongly preferred for both positions. Experience with Global Positioning Systems and GIS a plus. Strong work ethic and ability to work well independently in the field required.
