Job Description:
The position will have statewide responsibilities as a lead coordinator for the Voluntary Public Access and Habitat Incentive Program (VPA-HIP), which covers four focus areas within the state and covering 37 counties. The objective of the Wisconsin VPA-HIP is to provide wildlife-dependent public access including hunting, fishing and trapping by leasing private lands and to offer technical assistance to facilitate wildlife habitat management to landowners who enroll in the program. The program is intended to complement Wisconsin’s existing Public Hunting Ground leasing program. This position works independently or with general direction from a WDNR Wildlife Management Supervisor (based in Madison), as well as with WDNR Wildlife Biologists and partner groups while performing statewide wildlife management responsibilities that include a combination of the following duties: 40% – Take the lead in coordinating and directing four regional Public Access Liaison staff on implementation of the VPA-HIP, including day-to-day communication and support; 20% – Administer the program budget and develop spending reports per program agreement; 20% – Meet with external and internal partner groups and leadership teams, including federal and state agencies, constituent groups, and conservation organizations, to facilitate the development and implementation of VPA-HIP, including sharing locations of enrolled properties, developing monitoring program and goals, and facilitating opportunities to expand awareness of the program, 10% – Facilitate and lead meetings with WDNR Wildlife Biologists to determine areas to concentrate efforts for leasing land within the state’s four focus areas, and develop strategies for locating and approaching willing landowners; 10% – Provide technical assistance to landowners for habitat management activities on their properties that will benefit the VPA-HIP, and assist field staff with posting properties and other duties as needed.
Knowledge Required:
Ability to map properties using GIS ArcView; knowledge of wildlife biology & wildlife management techniques, GPS & Coordinate system & map reading skills; Previous experience using Microsoft Office Suite Products. Previous experience with administration and budgets. Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers, private landowners, and the public.
