GIS Intern

Description:

The City of Dubuque is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the position of GIS Intern. Under the general supervision of the GIS Coordinator/Analyst, this intern will perform a variety of technical and basic professional GIS assignments, particularly related to data creation and development, maintenance and map production.

Examples of Duties:

Duties include a variety of tasks related to the City of Dubuque’s Geographic Information System (GIS). These duties include GPS data collection, data creation, data entry, supervised project management, review of data for quality control and quality assurance and GIS map design.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Familiarity with ESRI ArcGIS 10x, computers, operating systems including Windows XP; familiarity with maps and digital mapping techniques and data creation; familiarity with GPS data collection; familiarity with forestry; ability to work independently on projects; ability to conduct independent data review for quality control and quality assurance; ability to maintain effective working partnerships with employees and the general public; analytical and communication skills; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; demonstrated ability to follow a management philosophy that is input oriented and values problem solving and the development of partnerships; demonstrated ability to be a team player; and a desire to be part of an organization that values service, people, integrity, responsibility, innovation and team work.

Typical Qualifications:

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Some undergraduate coursework in geography, planning, forestry, engineering, computer sciences or other related field; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the essential knowledge, skills and abilities.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: The GIS Intern should be available to work approximately 40 hours per week between 8 AM and 5 PM Monday through Friday, with the term of thirteen weeks beginning in May and ending in August.
