Job Duties:
The Engineering Technician facilitates the process of developing and producing electronic detour maps to be posted on the Wisconsin Department of Transportations (DOT) website. This position coordinates and facilitates with TOPS & DOT staff the issuance of oversize, overweight permit requests, which will include identifying difficult or confusing turns and troubleshooting existing loads that may need to be detoured for various reasons (e.g. natural disasters, weather delays, etc.). This position also processes permit requests and provides transportation related data with time constraints; reads and interprets crash data reports, processes contract documents such as interagency agreements, work orders and contract extensions, and communicates information from various meetings with TOPS staff; and monitors and addresses concerns and complaints from a broad range of customers.
Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of MicroStation and GIS applications; MS Office products including Access and basic Internet publishing; knowledge of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and Wisconsin MUTCD Supplement; familiarity with AASHTO Green Book and Wisconsin Facilities Development Manual; knowledge of traffic safety principles; ability to perform basic analysis of crash information; ability to maintain accurate records; ability to work well in a team environment as well as independently; effective written and oral communication skills; and superior time management and organizational skills.
