Degree and area of specialization:
B.S. in geography, forestry, environmental science, computer science or a related discipline. MS preferred.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
1-2 years of experience in remote sensing image classification (e.g., with ERDAS Imagine, ENVI), and processing of GIS datasets (e.g., in ArcGIS, GRASS) is essential. Programming experience at least to write macros to automate tasks highly desirable. Familiarity with Internet-GIS a plus. The GIS/Remote Sensing Specialist will organize and manage an extensive spatial databases, and support and lead efforts to map land use and land use change. The specialist will also be responsible for documenting metadata and creating maps. Experience with conservation-related spatial data analysis is a plus.
Principal duties:
- The GIS Specialist will organize and manage an extensive spatial database. The specialist will also be responsible for documenting metadata and creating maps.
- 65% Acquire and process satellite remote sensing data. This consists of extracting and organizing information for multiple study areas, manipulation of satellite imagery to generate new information.
- 35% Acquire and process GIS datasets. This consists of designing, implementing, populating, and maintaining various GIS datasets.
- 5% Document metadata for new and existing datasets. This involves using ESRI ArcCatalog or other software for recording FGDC compliant metadata about new and existing data.
