Description:
We are recruiting for one full-time position as either a Research Intern (M.S. required) or Research Associate (post-doctoral position) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, in collaboration with the US Forest Service Northern Research Station and the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. This is a 1-year position from 1 October 2011 through September 2012; extension to a second year is dependent on funding and acceptable performance. Salary will begin at $35,000 per year. Start date is negotiable.

This position serves to provide support for the analysis of long-term datasets, one on amphibians and the other on beavers in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. The purpose of the project is to provide science-based information to support inventory and monitoring efforts that contribute to the management of ecosystems and activities on the forest.

Responsibilities:
The Research Intern is responsible for providing support and helping to develop conceptual models of the amphibian and beaver projects. These models will provide an overarching framework in which extant data can be evaluated for analysis, and help determine additional environmental and spatial variables required to address management concerns. Once evaluation is completed, one of the datasets will be chosen for further development and analysis. The Research Intern will retrieve identified environmental (e.g., water quality, climate data) and spatial (e.g., surrounding landcover/use of surrounding landscape) data, incorporate all data into a GIS, and calculate landscape metrics identified in the conceptual model. The Research Intern will have the opportunity to participate in the analysis of the data. The Research Intern will also archive the data in collaboration with the USFS Research Data Archive.

Knowledge and experience required:

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in wildlife ecology, natural resources management, or related field required
  • Experience with GIS
  • Experience with and knowledge of statistical analysis strongly desired
  • Willingness to learn new software (e.g., METAVIST) desired
  • Proven oral and written communication skills
