Degree and area of specialization:
Minimum M.S. in sociology, demography or related field.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
The applicant should have extensive professional experience in the field of applied demography including expertise in small area population estimates or projections. The applicant must have graduate level training or professional experience in social statistics and data analysis. Experience with social science statistical analysis packages such as Stata, SAS, or R required. Experience with GIS and spatial data analysis preferred
Principal duties:
20%–Develop and maintain large projects within the UW Applied Population Laboratory (APL). Propose innovative approaches to project design to meet client needs; meeting and negotiating with clients about potentials projects; deciding on and employing appropriate methods for analysis; designing presentation approaches (style, organization, details) to best fit client needs.
20%–Serve as a demographic methods expert, particularly in the areas of small area population estimates and projections and demographic data analysis. Provide guidance to others in the lab in implementing standard demographic methods. Modify existing or create new methods to address specific methodological problems.
25%–Design and implement demographic research to support APL projects and core areas of interest; provide ongoing assistance and support to other APL staff in the analysis and presentation of data.
10%–Provide data, analytical and outreach support to faculty, staff, and students in the Department of Community and Environmental Sociology as well as clientele of the APL. Represent the APL at national, regional, and local demography-related meetings, interest groups, talks, and presentations.
15%–Prepare reports, briefs, or newsletter articles on current demographic or population topics for lay audiences, state and local agencies, and professional colleagues and collaborators.
10%–Assist in the training, support, and supervision of student interns at the APL.
Responsible for generating revenue to cover a portion of salary.
