The Planning & GIS Intern provides assistance to the Neighborhood Planner by performing tasks associated with the updating of a neighborhood plan and other planning projects as assigned and needed.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Research, design, prepare and conduct land use survey, maintain records and collect data
  • Coordinate the preparation of land use surveys covering several plan areas.
  • Data will be collected in the field and entered into a laptop.
  • Prepare maps, reports and summaries using Microsoft Office and ArcGIS.
  • Conduct comparative analysis of existing land use, future land use and zoning classification of subject properties.
  • Assists in the preparation of various updates to the Village Area Neighborhood Plan and other City planning studies or projects.
  • Assists in the facilitation of neighborhood or group meetings, informational sessions, open houses, public hearings or similar group processes.
  • Researches and prepares PowerPoint presentations and other media presentations for Community Development staff regarding neighborhood plans, redevelopment strategies, and other current planning issues.
  • Assists with the preparation of economic development activities and meetings, as needed.
  • Coordinates mailings for property owners within plan areas.
  • Attends various City committee meetings (i.e. Plan Commission, Economic Development Committee, Community Development Authority, Common Council) to learn about the neighborhood planning process.

THE REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Graduate or Undergraduate classwork completed with emphasis in urban and regional planning, urban affairs, economic development, public administration, business or GIS preferred.
  2. Ability to research using statistical methods and sources of data relating to planning and economic development.
  3. Knowledge of ESRI Geographic Information Systems computer applications.
  4. Knowledge of computer software programs including spreadsheets, word processing and databases.
  5. Ability to perform intermediate calculations.
  6. Ability to effectively communicate in both written and verbal formats.
  7. Valid driver’s license, current automobile insurance and access to and use of personal vehicle.
