This position is located at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, College of Engineering/Department of Civil and Environment Engineering.  This position works with the Traffic Safety and Operations Laboratory (TOPS lab), a comprehensive state-of-the-art program focused on all elements of traffic engineering.  The lab provides the focal point for traffic safety and operations research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and provides a forum for classroom teaching and experimentation incorporating the latest transportation technologies. The TOPS Laboratory also provides research and engineering services to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) and other local, state, and federal organizations.

Job Duties:  

The Engineering Technician provides support for a variety of field data collection services for the TOPS Laboratory.  This position coordinates No Passing Zone Spotting Assessment and Monitoring Research Data Collection; reviews roadway survey requests from Regions, other governmental agencies, and private contractors; develops and maintains a GIS map illustrating all state highways and the No Passing Zone criteria standards for all the highways; provides technical engineering data on centerlines, no passing zones and other markings to support development of statewide pavement marking and maintenance program and research priorities; develops and maintains records of county highway painting activity reports and produce monthly/yearly summary reports; coordinates and performs routine performance measurements of new pavement marking materials on sections of concrete and asphalt pavement; applies power and telecommunications concepts to support installation of emerging traffic control and data field devices such as Photovoltaic (solar) panels, Bluetooth detection with Media Access Control Addresses, GPS Devices, and Cellular Network Identification; and verifies validity of traffic operations and safety data from various data collection devices.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

Knowledge of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and Wisconsin MUTCD Supplement and the Wisconsin Standard Specifications for Highway Construction, Traffic Guidelines Manual, Pavement Marking Operations Manual, and Standard Detail Drawings for pavement marking;  safe operations of heavy duty trucks and equipment; basic knowledge of traffic safety principles; knowledge of remote sensing devices (e.g., GPS, mobile data devices traffic data collection); basic automotive mechanical and electrical maintenance procedures; Marking Inventory Management Systems; knowledge of highway project design, construction, maintenance and operation standards, processes and procedures; ability to perform basic analysis of traffic operations and crash information; maintain accurate records; work proficiently with basic Geographical Information System functions and MS Office products including Access and basic Internet publishing; work with minimal supervision; work well in a team environment with UW, DOT and Contractor representatives; skill at creative and innovative thinking or approaches to solve problems; and excellent oral and written communication skills.
