This position is located in the Division of Library/Archives at the Wisconsin Historical Society in Madison, Wisconsin.

Position Duties:

This is a full-time specialized professional position. This position works under the supervision of the Head of the Cataloging and Collections Management Services. This position is responsible for: A) preparation of original and edited cataloging and classification for cartographic materials in both print and electronic formats, received or held by the Wisconsin Historical Society Library; B) evaluation and acquisition of Wisconsin and related North American cartographic items and volumes for acquisition within the context of the Society’s collecting policies; C) preservation; and D) storage space management for the cartographic collection.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of library standards, methods, theory, and practice, as typically acquired in a library science graduate school program or comparable certification.
  • Knowledge of electronic records concepts and practice relating to cataloging and access.
  • Advanced knowledge of accepted library descriptive cataloging theory and practice.
  • Advanced knowledge of accepted library subject cataloging theory and practice; ability to analyze publications for subject content and assign appropriate subject headings and call numbers.
  • Ability to analyze terms for conformity to Library of Congress and the Library’s name and subject authority records, in order to ensure consistency in cataloging records.
  • Advanced knowledge of bibliographic formats and standards for the OCLC international bibliographic database; ability to search, update, correct, upgrade, and input ISBD/AACR2 records.
  • Knowledge/skills/ability with using MS office applications.
  • Ability to adapt readily and effectively to the rapidly changing world of information systems, and to each succeeding generation of tools needed for locating and accessing information and data.
