Background/Purpose
Shoreland’s GIS division is currently engaged in several ongoing, time- and labor-intensive projects. With the recent acquisition of GIS datasets, there is a new and immediate need to refit existing boundaries on Shoreland maps to accommodate them. In an effort to minimize any additional workload on Shoreland’s full-time GIS staff, the company is announcing this internship opportunity.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Candidates will be proficient with the ArcGIS and Microsoft Office suites, and will also be experienced in targeted Internet searching. The ability to clearly express ideas in writing and speech is required. These skills will be assessed by Shoreland’s GIS department head through a three-fold process involving (a) submission of independent GIS work conceived and conducted by the student, (b) review of candidates’ academic and professional histories (curriculum vitae), and (c) one-on-one interviews. Students of senior standing are preferred.
Compensation
The GIS intern will receive an hourly rate of $12.00 for 280 hours of work (14 weeks at 20 hours per week), with a start date of 4 June 2012. The intern will be paid on the same bimonthly schedule as regular employees. Candidates seeking educational credit for their experience (up to 6 credit hours) will be responsible for making necessary arrangements with her or his academic advisor.
Retention
Following successful completion of the program, the intern may or may not be offered a position at the discretion of Shoreland’s management.
