Principal duties:
Under direction, designs and develops web-based, graphical user interfaces for educational, outreach, and research objectives of the Paleobiology Database, Macrostrat, and Stratapendium.
- 50% Builds and deploys creative, user-oriented web-based solutions to complex data visualization and analysis problems.
- 50% Works closely with full-time database computer programmer to generate web interfaces that include media (e.g., tagged photos, videos) and graphical design elements.
- Responsibilities focus on taking data elements and building user interfaces.
Degree and area of specialization:
- Bachelor’s degree in Earth or Computer Science or related field.
- Minimum of three years experience in HTML, HTML-5, CSS, JavaScript and other web-based interface development environments, including Google Maps/Earth API.
- Broad understanding of web-database integration and utilization and expertise in web-database integration using PHP, Perl, CGI.
- Ability to quickly understand new developments in information science and creatively apply those developments to working systems in order to enhance data utility and accessibility for broad audiences.
- Excellent visual communication and writing skills and ability to work constructively with a team is essential.
- Desireable: Proficiency in Apple iOS development environment. Interest in and familiarity with scientific data, especially spatially-oriented ecological, taxonomic, and geological data.
