Principal duties:

Under direction, designs and develops web-based, graphical user interfaces for educational, outreach, and research objectives of the Paleobiology Database, Macrostrat, and Stratapendium.

  1. 50% Builds and deploys creative, user-oriented web-based solutions to complex data visualization and analysis problems.
  2. 50% Works closely with full-time database computer programmer to generate web interfaces that include media (e.g., tagged photos, videos) and graphical design elements.
  3. Responsibilities focus on taking data elements and building user interfaces.

 

Degree and area of specialization:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Earth or Computer Science or related field.
  • Minimum of three years experience in HTML, HTML-5, CSS, JavaScript and other web-based interface development environments, including Google Maps/Earth API.
  • Broad understanding of web-database integration and utilization and expertise in web-database integration using PHP, Perl, CGI.
  • Ability to quickly understand new developments in information science and creatively apply those developments to working systems in order to enhance data utility and accessibility for broad audiences.
  • Excellent visual communication and writing skills and ability to work constructively with a team is essential.
  • Desireable: Proficiency in Apple iOS development environment. Interest in and familiarity with scientific data, especially spatially-oriented ecological, taxonomic, and geological data.
