Summary:
Full time technical position involves varied field and office surveying duties and related assignments. Will also prepare and update maps and do drafting primarily from professionally prepared preliminary sketches or survey field notes
Qualifications:
Associate’s degree in Surveying, Engineering, or related field and one year of surveying work experience OR combination of required education and/or surveying work experience. Also must possess certification at the Certified Survey Technician level I or higher certification within six months of hire.
NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATION: Valid driver’s license and a driving record that meets County standards OR ability to obtain reliable transportation as needed to perform job duties.
Examples of Work Performed:
- Assist the County Surveyor in performing all duties required by Wisconsin Statutes Section 59 which includes establishment, re-establishment, and perpetuation of Public Land Survey System (PLSS) corners.
- Assist in the administration of the County Remonumentation and Map Filing program by overseeing the placement of land survey monuments as required by Wisconsin Administrative Code and county ordinances. Maintain PLSS corner monumentation books and index sheets, both manual and electronic. Assist in establishing geodetic coordinates on PLSS corners suitable for use in developing a Land Information System (LIS) base.
- Assist in performing survey work as necessary for the County PRF (Parks Recreation & Forestry) Department, Highway Department, and other departments as needed. Assist CPZ (Conservation, Planning, & Zoning) Department and Corporation Counsel in efforts to resolve problems arising as a result of land being omitted from the original government survey.
- Assist PRF (Parks Recreation & Forestry) Department in timber trespass situations and set corners and mark boundary lines to prevent County logging projects from encroaching onto private land.
- Assist the public with questions or problems concerning surveying and land boundaries. Perform records search, field search and re-establishment of section or quarter section corners when informed by public that reference and/or corner monument has been disturbed or destroyed.
- File and index public land survey records and maps of surveys both manually and electronically. Assist private surveyors in records search, corner verifications and methods and procedures for recovery or re-establishment of corners of the original government survey.
- Assist in the review of certified surveys, preliminary and final plats to assure compliance with the Marathon County Land Division Ordinance and Wisconsin Statutes.
- Assist in conducting preliminary field investigation and reconnaissance prior to preparing specifications for survey work, Assessor’s Plats or Global Positioning System (GPS) projects.
- Maintain and distribute to private surveyors, any information on the County geodetic network and coordinate system, including documentation of County established traverse networks.
- Assist in imaging and imaging maintenance records for all programs in the CPZ (Conservation, Planning, & Zoning) Department including web site work.
- Assist in scanning remonumentation sheets and other survey records.
- Help maintain elevation network and help expand the network throughout the County.
- Help finish Global Positioning of all section and quarter section corners.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of land surveying.
- Knowledge of the methods and materials used in drafting, particularly in drawing and updating maps and public works construction project plans.
- Knowledge of engineering principles and practices and the materials and equipment involved in the engineering field.
- Knowledge of algebra, trigonometry, and geometry as it applies to surveying functions.
- Considerable skill in the use of computer aided drafting and surveying software.
- Considerable skill in the use of drafting instruments and tools.
- Considerable skill in the use of surveying instruments including GPS, Total Stations, EdMs, transit, and data collector.
