The Department of Natural Resources is dedicated to the preservation, protection, effective management, and maintenance of Wisconsin’s natural resources. The Division of Forestry is currently seeking an IT/GIS Field Support Coordinator to join our team in the DNR located in Rhinelander, WI.
Job Duties:
The FR Field IT/GIS Support Coordinator coordinates the work of a team of IT/GIS professionals dedicated to supporting field operations for the Division of Forestry to use specialized knowledge of complex emerging technologies including Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Global Positioning System (GPS), and the full range of specialized forestry information technologies and applications (e.g. field data recorders with integrated GPS, WI Forest Inventory & Reporting System (WisFIRS), Fire Reporting System, etc.) to support the work of Forestry staff for analysis, reporting, mapping, spatial data capture, and general technology use. This position is part of a section of IT professionals each with a focused discipline.
In an effort to help ensure the Forestry Division staff and its partners are able to use technology effectively in their jobs, this position is responsible for training in formal and non-formal settings. The position requires a strong knowledge base and experience in IT/GIS, GPS systems, understanding Forestry practices and terminology, with the aptitude and desire for helping and teaching staff and customers how to make efficient use of technology. The position helps assure that forestry IT applications meet department and enterprise standards.
This position maintains contemporary knowledge and expertise by staying abreast of current technology and maintaining an effective professional network. The customer base for this position is primarily the is 450-500 Forestry Division staff, including three central office bureaus and four districts, as well as colleagues throughout the Department and key partner groups statewide as well as corresponding programs in the US Forest Service and other state and local units of government.
Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- College-level training or professional development in the use of GIS in a natural resource management or related field.
- Working knowledge of the concepts, functionality, and appropriate applications of GIS software.
- Working knowledge of the specific functionality, operation, and appropriate applications of the ~ ArcGIS software and graphic design/output software.
- Working knowledge of the concepts and execution of GIS data analysis, and how to effectively apply these methodologies to natural resource applications.
- Working knowledge of the types and sources of GIS data, and the methods used to compile and incorporate those data into cartographic and analysis projects.
- Working knowledge of automated cartographic production as implemented using ArcGIS software.
- Working knowledge of remote sensing technologies including digital imagery, ground control and aerial photography use in natural resources.
- Working knowledge of the concepts, functionality, and applications of GIS/GPS technology in natural resource management.
- Must be able to travel throughout the state independently.
