Job Description: A 12 month half-time (20 hours/week) Natural Resource Research Scientist position with the Wildlife and Forestry Research Group of the Bureau of Science Services. The position will take a leadership role on several related research studies, including: evaluating the costs and benefits of woody biomass harvesting and forest harvest guidelines (50%), and assessing regional impact of restorative forest harvest practices on timber supply and ecosystem service delivery (50%). Duties will include 1) identifying and synthesizing relevant scientific literature, 2) using ArcGIS to identify site suitability, 3) managing existing forest inventory data and utilization in forest harvest models, and 4) synthesizing research findings. The position will be based out of the Madison office but may include occasional travel across the state to interact with forest managers and those in forest industry to identify the best available data. Independent travel in state vehicles is required so the successful candidate must possess a valid driver’s license. Use of a personal vehicle may be required if a state vehicle is unavailable.

Knowledge Required: Applicant should have academic training in forestry, with emphasis in natural resource economics. Required experience includes knowledge of silviculture, landcover mapping, statistics, and demonstrated organizational, oral, and written communication skills. Desired skills include proficiency using standard personal computer systems, knowledge and experience with Excel, ArcGIS and statistical software programs, and ability to cooperate and collaborate with others to accomplish a shared goal.
