Degree and area of specialization:
Bachelor’s Degree in Geography, Cartography, Geographic Information Systems, Management Information Systems, Computer Science, or closely related field.
A Bachelor’s Degree in another area of study combined with a graduate certificate in GIS, or combined with two years experience in mapping and/or GIS application my be substituted for the above requirement.

The Wisconsin State Cartographer’s Office (SCO), a unit administered by the Department of Geography at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, seeks a qualified individual to develop and maintain geospatial technologies in support of SCO’s outreach mission. This includes investigation, testing, development, deployment, and ongoing maintenance of open source and commercial geographic information system (GIS) software in traditional and web-based applications, as well as development and implementation of analysis and visualization methods for remote sensing data and other raster datasets.
The SCO — with a statutory mission of outreach, information/data dissemination, and coordination — gathers, maintains and delivers information about mapping and geospatial activities in the state. It accomplishes and coordinates these duties through various means, including print and web publications, presentations at conferences and workshops, and leadership and participation on statewide and local councils, associations, committees, taskforces, and consortia.
The ideal candidate will have skills and experience in these areas:
- Understanding of cartographic, remote sensing, and GIS principles and methods.
- Experience with GIS analysis tools and methods, including geospatial databases.
- Experience with scripting and/or programming for geospatial data.
- Technical understanding of common web concepts.
Other desirable qualifications include:
- Experience working for an organization with an outreach or educational mission.
- Organizational and project management skills as demonstrated through past projects.
Principal duties:
DESCRIPTION OF VACANT POSITION:
Principal Duties:
60% Program Development
- Research, develop and implement new geospatial technologies to support SCO outreach efforts, data/information dissemination goals, and data integration initiatives.
- Participate in opportunities to obtain funding for SCO initiatives through grants and contracts.
- Assist in the development and maintenance of SCO web pages, geospatial applications, and statewide databases/enterprise datasets.
- Stay on top of important geospatial technology trends, with the goal of incorporating new approaches into SCO programs and disseminating new ideas to the geospatial community.
- Coordinate with SCO staff to update content in catalogs, publications, and web-based materials.
- Document internal policies and procedures.
- Train students and staff to perform selected technical tasks.
30% Communication/Outreach
- Present at conferences and meeting to promote SCO initiatives.
- Assist in the development of professional publications highlighting SCO projects.
- Write content for SCO publications and web site.
- Assist SCO staff in developing and implementing workshops and training materials.
- Interface with other geospatial professionals in support of common objectives and initiatives.
10% Other duties as assigned
- Assist with general office outreach functions at conferences and workshops.
- Participate in departmental and campus committees.
- Participate in state GIS associations and meeting.
- Assist in long-term planning of SCO activities and initiatives.
A criminal background check will be conducted prior to hiring.
A period of evaluation will be required.
