Dr. Kirsten Beyer at the Medical College of Wisconsin Institute for Health and Society seeks a part-time Geographic Information Systems Data Analyst 1 to contribute to ongoing research and teaching activities at the intersection of geography and public health. 

Responsibilities
The GIS Data Analyst will contribute to ongoing research and teaching activities at the intersection of geography and public health.  Current research projects are focused on the areas of cancer health disparities, green space, and violence prevention.  Responsibilities will include spatial analysis, characterization of neighborhood environments using GIS and remote sensing, data management and analysis, writing, and assisting in the development and implementation of a new graduate level health and medical geography course as part of MCW’s PhD Program in Public and Community Health.

Qualifications
Must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Geography, Geographic Information Science/Systems, or related field; graduate-level training is preferred. Must have a minimum of 1 year of experience working with geospatial databases, geospatial software programs (including ArcGIS), and statistical analysis software (STATA, R); 3 years of experience is preferred. Experience with remote sensing software (Erdas Imagine) preferred. Strong knowledge of current GIS technologies, especially core ESRI desktop software, is required. Must be able to conceptualize, design, compose and produce complex cartographic and other spatial data displays.

Excellent interpersonal and communication (both written and verbal) skills.  Ability to demonstrate responsibility and dependability when completing assignments, and to work independently and as part of a team.  Strong critical thinking, analytical, problem solving, and troubleshooting skills. Accuracy and attentiveness to detail.  Self-motivated, goal-oriented and a problem-solver. Ability to effectively plan and organize projects impacting the work of others. Excellent time management skills. Skill in conveying technical information to non-technical users. Skill in working with a variety of individuals from diverse backgrounds. Skill in handling multiple competing priorities.

Schedule, Duration and Accommodation
The position will begin as early as September 2013 and will continue through June 2014, contingent on funding. Long term possibilities are dependent on funding. The assistant is expected to work 20 hours per week, between 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM. Work hours are flexible but must be agreed upon in advance.  A workspace and appropriate software will be provided at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Salary
$20-$23/hour
