Faculty Associate – Geodesign

Degree and area of specialization:

PhD desired; at least one degree to be in Landscape Architecture or closely related design field.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

Preference will be given to those candidates with three or more years of recent experience teaching advanced college-level courses in Landscape Architecture or closely related field. Instructional experience in on-line or distance-learning courses, including asynchronous and synchronous formats is desired. The candidate must demonstrate competency in the use and application of GIS and geospatial technology to design problems, and the ability to incorporate instruction in such technology into the curriculum. Candidates must demonstrate enthusiasm, understanding and competency with Geodesign principles and methods, and be able to successfully lead the implementation of a new Geodesign program with a distance learning focus. Candidate must also have excellent written and verbal communication skills, organizational and management experience including work with budgets and schedules, technical capabilities especially related to GIS and geospatial technology.

Principal duties:

The Faculty Associate will assume UW-Madison’s principal leadership over a new interdisciplinary, multi-campus post-baccalaureate program in Geodesign, to be launched in the fall of 2014. This is a 15-credit, one-year on-line program designed for professional students. Anticipated enrollment is estimated to be 30 students across two campuses. The Faculty Associate will supervise the program coordinator housed at UW-Madison. This position and the program coordinator will meet regularly with an oversight committee to contribute to the development and growth of the program.

Principal duties for the Geodesign program lead include oversight of course curriculum and syllabi; assessment of student outcomes; development of new courses and program components; recruiting and marketing; evaluation of stakeholder needs; overall strategic direction and management.

The Faculty Associate will develop and teach 1-2 on-line courses in the Geodesign program and 1 studio course with a Geodesign emphasis in the Department of Landscape Architecture. Other course assignments may occur depending on final instructional responsibilities in the certificate program. Other duties include: active participation in staff meetings, program committees, and new initiatives to enhance the quality and visibility of the Landscape Architecture program; engage in appropriate assessment activities to ensure quality and consistency in teaching; prepare new course materials and new courses to meet the changing needs of Landscape Architecture students.

The Faculty Associate will fulfill general responsibilities related to teaching, which include developing lectures and class materials; creating a class schedule and syllabus; posting and holding regular office hours; holding student conferences; providing written and verbal feedback on evaluation materials; and grading exams, projects, team work, and oral presentations.

The Faculty Associate will actively pursue professional development opportunities in areas relevant to Landscape Architecture and Geodesign and on-line teaching and learning.

This is a full-time, 12-month appointment with responsibilities divided between Geodesign program administration (20%) and teaching Landscape Architecture courses, including the certificate courses (70%) and service (10%). The position is initially a three-year term, renewable each year based on satisfactory performance. Extension beyond the initial three-year term is dependent on several factors, including the success of the Geodesign program and the availability of funding.
