Join WisDOT’s Division of Transportation System Development (DTSD) as surveyor using your surveying skills in metro, urban, and rural areas. This recruitment will be used to fill vacancies as they occur in Waukesha, Rhinelander, (Oneida County), Wisconsin Rapids (Wood County), Eau Claire, Superior (Douglas County), La Crosse, Green Bay (Brown County), and Madison (Dane County) for the next six to twelve months.
Two vacancies exist in DTSD’s Northwest Region (Eau Claire or Superior as the headquarters) and one vacancy exists in DTSD’s Southwest Region (Madison as the headquarters).

Job Duties:
Positions perform a wide range of surveying activities such as: identifying appropriate mapping/survey needs for project requests; interpreting roadway plans, plats, legal survey documents, flight design and other maps, automated map design, layout standards and mapping requirements; converting, computing and adjusting engineering data between horizontal datums, vertical datums, and coordinate systems using CAiCE and/or other software; establishing control points; scheduling and assigning field crews’ work assignments to provide engineering data to meet program/project schedules.
These positions act as Survey Coordinator and plan, direct, coordinate, schedule and monitor work done by survey crews. These positions review consultant survey time and cost estimates with project managers; advise appropriate staff of time/effort necessary for the required survey work; interact with all Region sections regarding engineering data collection, computation problem resolution, and standard setting; provide guidance to the survey crews; and develop best practices for the survey crews to increase productivity and compatibility with office systems.

The employee must have or be able to obtain a valid Wisconsin driver’s license. In addition, some (but not all) positions in this classification require registration as a Land Surveyor in the State of Wisconsin.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of layout standards and technical mapping requirements
- Thorough knowledge of land surveying and geodetic surveying principles.
- Knowledge of land surveying mathematics and complex computations including traverse adjustments, closure, area and right-of-way curve computations, coordinate adjustments, and transformations.
- Extensive knowledge of trigonometry and survey mathematics.
- Knowledge of automated map design, production and geographic information system technology
- Good written and oral communication skills
- Ability to maintain positive public relations with property owners and the general public.
- Ability to effectively exercise independent judgment.
- Thorough knowledge of and skill in Data Collector operation.
- Thorough knowledge of and skill in Total Station operation.
- Knowledge of GIS applications.
- Ability to establish control points for alignments.
- Ability to interpret roadway plans, plats, private and legal survey documents, flight design and other maps.
- Working knowledge of personal computer survey applications.
- Knowledge of leadership principals and ability to lead and train staff.
- Extensive knowledge of traffic safety procedures.
