The USGS Wisconsin Water Science Center cooperates with the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) on programs in support of the National Standards and Support Team. One component of the program is maintenance of the USFWS Wetlands Master Geodatabase (MGD).  The Wetlands MGD houses the Wetlands Layer of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure and is a National Geospatial Data Asset.   The Wetlands Mapper provides an interface to the wetlands data and provides government, state and local agencies, universities, NGO’s and the public with wetland location and habitat information to assist in a suite of wetland and habitat programs, questions and applications.
 
Description of Duties
 
Background
The Wetlands MGD relies on key Information Technology (IT) components, specifically GIS, database, and development software components. The GIS components include ESRI ArcGIS, specifically ArcDesktop and ArcSDE, and Python scripting, database components include Oracle Relational Database Management System and Structured Query Language (SQL) and development software components are Visual Basic (VB), Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), VBScript and the ESRI ArcObjects Applications Programming Interface (API).  
 
Performance of Work
Incumbent in the position is assigned to the Wisconsin Water Science Center, Science Support Unit as a contractor and participates as a member of a highly skilled GIS team that supports the Wetlands MGD.
 
Specifically, the incumbent will support the Wetlands MGD team by completing the following tasks:
 
Enhance the Wetlands MGD by utilizing ESRI ArcGIS software to assist in efforts to perform various geoprocessing tasks including; data analysis, model development, spatial data organization, spatial data editing, map development and map interpretation. This work requires a high level of proficiency using ESRI ArcGIS software to manage databases along with a strong attention to detail and commitment to data quality. Strong GIS skills including experience with ArcSDE versioned databases, Python scripting and ArcGIS ModelBuilder are strongly preferred. Team members will be expected to report on their progress on a regular basis and submit their work for quality assurance. Along with this primary task team members will be asked to perform other GIS related tasks as needed to contribute to the Wetlands MGD and to complete other Fish and Wildlife Service goals, which may include work on landscape level analysis, habitat analysis, endangered species and environmental contaminants. 
 
Major duties include:
• Geospatial Database Development: spatial data organization, spatial data editing, map development, data processing.
• GIS Processing: data analysis, model building and scripting.
 
Experience Requirements:
Applicants should have strong computer, data processing and organizational skills. Formal education and practical experience in geographic, cartographic, and GIS principles is required. A background in Natural Resources would be beneficial.
