Job Summary
The American Geographical Society Library, UW-Milwaukee Libraries, is seeking a future-focused, highly motivated and service oriented Geospatial Information Specialist. The successful candidate joins a dynamic, experienced staff in the AGSL and a growing team of UWM librarians committed to developing and supporting digital scholarship services for faculty and students, and will work collaboratively with other units across campus in advancing geospatial driven scholarship at UWM. The incumbent will have responsibility for curating and maintaining the digital spatial data clearinghouse, promoting the use of geographically referenced information in digital scholarship across campus, providing reference and instruction services for geospatial information, supervision of graduate student interns, and collaboration with Librarians in the Reference and Information Services department, including the Data Services Librarian. Candidates should exhibit a strong public service orientation, a high degree of facility with technologies and systems relevant to a 21st century library and be versed in the issues surrounding scholarly communications and digital scholarship.
This position reports to the Curator of the AGSL.
Minimum Qualifications
- Advanced degree in Geography, Cartography, or related discipline; or a Bachelor’s degree with two years of experience with GIS
- Demonstrated understanding of cartographic and geospatial resources.
Prefferred Qualifications
- ALA Accredited MLS or MLIS degree
- Experience working in an academic or research library
- Experience with preservation of geospatial data
- Experience with data visualization tools, software and concepts as related to geospatial information
- GIS programming/scripting experience (VBA/Python)
- Knowledge of geodatabases and ArcServer
- Experience with ESRI Geoportal or other server based metadata catalog
