Geography & Geology Program Assistant Professor

Job Details:

The Geography and Geology Program seeks applications for a tenure track position (Assistant Professor) in Geography with an emphasis in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Physical Geography. The effective date of appointment is August 19, 2014.

Qualifications:

1) PhD in Geography completed with transcripts no later than January 1st, 2015; 2) teaching and research specialization in GIS and Physical Geography; 3) enthusiasm for integrating field and laboratory activities with GIS instruction; and 4) experience and strong interest in mentoring undergraduate researchers.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will teach introductory and advanced undergraduate courses in GIS to students from a range of majors including, but not limited to, geography, biology, engineering, and reclamation. Additional responsibilities include mentoring student research and maintaining the GIS laboratory computers, server, and geospatial field equipment. The Geography program at UW-Platteville has a strong tradition of providing field experiences and hands-on research opportunities to undergraduate students, particularly for students from groups underrepresented in science and higher education. The ideal candidate will continue these traditions in their GIS coursework while developing a research program that explicitly incorporates undergraduate students in high-impact, transformative research experiences that enhance the opportunities provided through the Tree-ring, Earth and Environmental Sciences Laboratory (TREES Lab). Responsibilities and evaluation for retention, promotion, and tenure will be 40% teaching, 40% research, and 20% service to the university and community.

Department Information:

The Geography & Geology Program is part of the Department of Social Sciences in the College of Liberal Arts and Education. Currently we have six tenure line faculty positions and two academic staff instructors. We offer a major in Geography and minors in Geography and Environmental Science. The Geography Program is home to the TREES Lab, which is dedicated to facilitating undergraduate research in physical and environmental geography.
