The GIS Specialist position is responsible for the manipulation of digital geographic data in support of database and map production tasks. Responsibilities include editing data in a geographic information systems (GIS) environment in ArcServer, geodatabase, and shapefile environments; manipulation and merging of digital files, map layout and design, and creation of output files ready for cartographic production. The position requires collaboration with other teams (research, sales, and project management), contractors, business partners and customers. Additional skills needed include ability to interpret and follow GIS/cartographic standards and procedures, follow and implement a QA/QC process, and recommend modifications to any standards and procedures as required by changes in GIS data or software capability.

Essential Functions

  • Manage GIS-based projects;
  • Plan and execute major GIS/Database upgrades;
  • Resolve specific functional and technical issues;
  • Perform GIS data collection and implement the data into a central database;
  • Perform geographic data entry and conversion; and
  • Automate routine tasks for data conversion, data entry and map production.

Skill Requirements of Work

This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in Geography or related field; a GIS certification is a plus. Two years of experience working with Geographic Information Systems or any combination of work/training is required. Demonstrated experience with ESRI ArcGIS 10.X product suite including ArcMap, ArcCatalog, ArcToolbox, ArcServer Spatial Analyst extension, and Model Builder and/or Python . Must be proficient in all Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, and Access). Working knowledge of fishing and Adobe Illustrator/InDesign is desirable. Also, the desired candidate must have strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
