The Department of Transportation is currently looking to fill multiple Urban and Regional Planner vacancies in the Division of Transportation Investment Management with individuals who are interested in urban and regional transportation planning in Wisconsin.

Job Duties:  

The Urban and Regional Planner positions assist with production of long range planning efforts and related policy studies, and provide information and assistance to WisDOT management, other state agencies, and stakeholders. These positions will conduct special planning and related policy studies on transportation related issues as requested. These positions will also assist in the implementation of ongoing Department policies and related Department plans. These positions will be involved with the update to the Department’s Statewide Multimodal Long Range Transportation Plan and other statewide transportation planning efforts. 

Current vacancies in the Division of Transportation Investment Management include: 

Multi-Modal Freight Planner: This position will have a key role in freight planning and will participate in freight studies, data collection efforts, freight data analysis, stakeholder outreach, web-based freight data applications, and implementation of freight directives from federal legislation. This position will be directly involved with the preparation for a freight plan or freight component of a multimodal plan. 

GIS Transportation Planner: This position will provide data analysis and assistance in the development of multi-modal transportation systems, frequently using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), statistical analysis applications, and geodatabases to study, revise, and produce corridor, roadway, and boundary maps and assist with policy analysis, program evaluation, and impact assessments.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:   

  • Knowledge of transportation planning methodologies, applications, tools, and processes
  • Considerable knowledge of effective verbal, written, and graphic communication techniques
  • Knowledge of GIS applications, especially as used for transportation planning and analysis of transportation corridors
