The GIS Center (Pangea Studios, http://gis.uww.edu) at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks an energetic and qualified Research Program Manager I to help run and develop the Center.

The Center provides state-of-the-art online GIS mapping products and other GIS services to statewide and regional institutions and businesses. The Program Manager will manage the day-to-day operation of the Center including administrative and technical duties. Specific responsibilities include supervising student employees, conducting GIS project work, administrating the GIS data server, and marketing the Center to potential clients. The Program Manager works in cooperation with the GIS Center Director to prioritize Center projects, manage the Center’s budget, and help set the direction for the Center. The Center’s current projects include state-wide economic development and reporting tools, road network building for cities, water use and impacts, campus facilities mapping, GPS mapping for counties, and a variety of online business and economic tools to support regional economic development. The position is a great opportunity to grow and shape a relatively new university program.

The minimum requirements for the Program Manager are a Bachelor’s Degree in Geography or related discipline with two years of relevant work experience and/or a Master’s Degree in Geography or related discipline. In addition, the applicant must have demonstrated technical skills in the following areas:

  • ArcGIS analysis and cartography
  • Interactive web mapping: ESRI JavaScript API or other open-source mapping API
  • Dynamic web tools: JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and PHP
  • Administration of ArcGIS server and SDE data server
  • The Project Manager must have excellent writing and oral communication skills, excellent time-management skills, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. He or she must be able to supervise others and manage employees’ time to achieve project goals efficiently.
  • Preferred qualifications for the position include:
  • Training in economic geography and business applications of GIS
  • Interest and experience in education and research uses of GIS
  • Grant writing interest and ability

This position is a fixed-term academic staff appointment, is eligible for benefits provided to State of Wisconsin employees, and is subject to UW-Whitewater personnel rules. Fixed-term academic staff appointments are made on an annual basis, with renewal possible depending on performance and availability of funding. The position is currently funded for a two-year period.

Pangea Studios is housed within the Geography and Geology Department at UW-Whitewater, which features state of the art research and teaching facilities, two dedicated GIS and remote sensing labs, and approximately 100 undergraduate majors. Whitewater, a community of 12,000 residents near the scenic Kettle Moraine State Forest in southeastern Wisconsin, is within convenient driving distance to the metropolitan areas of Milwaukee, Madison, and Chicago.
