Job Details :

Responsibilities :
1. Provides technical support and instruction with GIS software and its use in spatial analysis, geoprocessing, and visualization for individuals and groups in various disciplines including but not limited to environmental sciences, earth & planetary sciences, engineering, history, anthropology, sociology, journalism. 2. Consults with faculty and students on the design and implementation of geodatabases and the application of geospatial analysis tools to support research and teaching. 3. Builds customized data extracts for students and other researchers; performs quality checks to ensure data integrity, troubleshooting when data integrity is at issue; converts data between formats; performs other data manipulation tasks as needed 4. Archives newly acquired datasets in the local data holdings mechanism to be accessed and shared by the NU research community. 5. Works in close cooperation with the Geospatial & Cartographic Specialist to continue development of a GIS Lab and support services. 6. Installs, maintains, and troubleshoots stand-alone data, statistical and governmental CD_ROM products. Maintains mechanisms, including menus, for user access to these products. 7. Provides general information service at the Main Library Reference Desk and accepts referrals of specialized reference questions. 8. Attends library and other training workshops as appropriate to acquire/maintain skills necessary to carry out position responsibilities. Actively participates in departmental and unit meetings. 9. Additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications :
1. Master’s degree in geography, earth and planetary sciences, environmental sciences, urban planning or other related field or the equivalent combination of education, training, and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired. 2. Practical experience using GIS software for geospatial analysis and modeling. 3. Working knowledge of ArcGIS; 4. Working knowledge of relational database software, e.g Microsoft Access, Oracle, MySQL, PostGreSQL; 5. Working knowledge of Excel and other Microsoft Office applications; 6. Public or customer service experience; 7. Excellent written and verbal communication skills; 8. Demonstrated ability to work independently and to manage projects. 9. Communication – communicates effectively one-on-one, in small groups, and in public speaking contexts; writes precise, well-organized emails, letters and proposals while using appropriate vocabulary and grammar. 11. Preferred Qualifications :
1. Experience with GIS data models, data conversion, geodatabase design and implementation;2. Experience with ArcGIS Extensions, e.g. Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst, Geostatistical Analyst; 3. Experience with Python scripting within ArcGIS; 4. Public service experience in a library or computer lab.
