What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position? 

This is a term appointment for which all qualified applicants with or without Federal status may apply and be considered. Appointment to this position, however, will not convey permanent status in the Federal service and will be for a period not to exceed 13 months with possible extensions up to a total of 4 years without further competition.

DUTIES:

As a Geographer within the USGS, Wisconsin Water Sciences Center, some of your specific duties will include: 

Migrating relational databases; design and maintain databases; development of GIS software systems; manager projects of complex GIS programs; maintains GIS orientated web-services software infrastructure and web sites locally and in cloud based infrastructures; ensure security measures for GIS systems and software; and operates a government vehicle as an incidental driver.

The U.S. Geological Survey has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

If you are qualifying based on specialized experience, you must meet the requirements listed below:

FOR GS-11:  one year of appropriate professional experience in geography that is equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service.

Examples of such experience may include: 1) locating, examining, evaluating and selecting, from a variety of source materials, information for use in depicting the location and standardizing the nomenclature of physical and humane features on a map, chart or in a gazetteer; 2) determining the distribution of like phenomena (e.g., deciduous vegetation or precipitation) over Eastern U.S., or comparing the distribution of two or three different kinds of phenomena, e.g., deciduous vegetation and precipitation; 3) providing assistance to a higher-graded researcher on small, self-contained studies. Examples 1 & 2 included independent responsibility for small projects or significant segments of larger projects. Discrepancies may have arisen in source materials. Judgment was used to resolve the less difficult problems; a higher-level authority resolved the most difficult problems. Work was carried out in accordance with established procedures and criteria. For example 3, extensive and precise instructions were provided and the project leader was readily available for consultation and guidance.

In addition, you must meet the following selective factor in order to be minimally qualified for this position:

I have one year of experience working in the Drupal platform for website creation and maintenance of geospatial cloud services.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?

A background investigation will be required for this position. Continued employment will be subject to the applicant’s successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.

You will be required to operate a government-owned or leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties.
