The Kenosha Water Utility is accepting applications to potentially hire two (2) college level Student Interns majoring in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or related field.   This position will  perform a variety of tasks in support of the GIS/Engineering Division, including the collection and analysis of GIS data and the preparation of maps, reports, charts and databases.  This position is tentatively scheduled to work 8 hours per day (Monday through Friday) during the summer months, although part-time hours may be considered while attending college.  The term of employment may be extended beyond this summer; however it may be terminated at any time depending on the needs of the Utility.  This internship will not lead to permanent full-time employment.

Example of Duties & Responsibilities:

The following duties are expected to be assigned to this position, although other related tasks may be required. 

  • Collects information from field sites, including the utilization of global system positioning system (GPS) surveying/mapping.
  • Inputs information into database.
  • Conducts analyses of GIS data.
  • Operates GIS and standard office software, hardware and associated peripheral devices including CAD, GPS, plotters, scanners, etc.
  • Assists with the preparation of maps, reports, charts, plans, specifications, and other documents by computer entry and retrieval.
  • Reads and interprets maps and diagrams of municipal water and sewer facilities.
  • Duplicates, assembles and collates materials.
  • Operates light truck or other Class D vehicle to conduct field research or other tasks.

Requirements:

Education/Training/Other Requirements:

  • Age 18 or older.
  • High school graduate (or equivalent) and currently enrolled as a student in good standing at an accredited college or university in pursuit of a 4-year degree with a major in Geographic Informations Systems (GIS), Geography, Cartography, or other related field; preferably at the junior or senior level (or recent graduate).
  • Must possess a valid driver license with good driving record (no DWI/OWI or reckless driving in the past 5 years; no more than 2 violations in 18 months or 3 violations in 36 months; no more than 6 points assessed in past 12 months).
  • If offered employment, must pass pre-employment drug screen, and is subject to random drug/alcohol testing during term of employment.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the current principles, methods and technologies related to Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
  • Knowlege of Microsoft Windows operating system and ability to use standard office software (e.g., word processing, spreadsheet, etc.) .
  • Skill in using GIS software and operating a computer aided drafting (CAD) system and global positioning system (GPS).
  • Skill in operating a variety of office equipment including plotter, copiers, scanners, computer and peripheral equipment, and printers.
  • Ability to read and interpret maps, charts and plans.
  • Ability to research and compile a variety of information.
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to learn quick and focus on assignments.
  • Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions, with attention to detail and organization.
  • Ability to handle reasonably necessary stress.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet and limbs in the operation of equipment, machinery and tools related to essential duties.
  • Ability to lift or move objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to walk, stand or sit for extended periods of time, including the ability to walk or stand on rough or uneven surfaces.
  • Ability to bend, reach, stoop, kneel and crouch.

Sensory Requirements:

  • Ability to recognize and identify degrees of similarities and differences between characteristics of colors, shapes, sounds, tastes, odors and textures associated with job-related objects, materials and tasks.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.

Environmental Requirements:

  • Tasks are performed indoors and outdoors, with occasional exposure to adverse environmental conditions such as: temperature/weather variations, odors, noise, wetness, traffic hazards, and/or dust.  Such exposure may cause some discomfort or a risk of injury.

 

Method of Selection:

Applicant’s education, training and experience will be analyzed upon receipt of application.  Written, oral and/or proficiency exams may be required to establish eligibility.  Appointment to the position will be in accordance with City policy, Civil Service Rules and Regulations and labor agreement, if appropriate.
