Summary

Verdanterra LLC is accepting applications to hire at least one college level Student Intern majoring in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or related field. This position will perform a variety of tasks to support the summer field season for an environmental consulting company. The position is tentatively scheduled to work 8 hours per day (Monday through Friday) during summer months. A part-time position may be considered while attending college. The term of the employment may be extended beyond this summer.

Reporting to the GIS Director, the GIS Technician Intern will provide support to Verdanterra’s GIS department with spatial data management, spatial analysis, as well as field map development. The GIS technician will perform basic GPS field data management including preparing background files for GPS units, post processing of GPS collected data, and conversion of GPS data into GIS data for displaying on maps.

This position is open to rising juniors, seniors, recent graduates, and graduate students.  The position is an hourly position, but applicants should be prepared to work full time through the summer.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in integration of field collected GPS data into GIS

  • Provide field map sets for field crews

  • Assist in acquiring GIS data from various sources (federal, state, local, other)

  • Create maps and graphs using GIS software and related equipment

  • Analyze spatial data for geographic statistics

  • Provide support in data management

Job Requirements

  • Some education in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) is a must. Preferably applicant would be at the junior or senior level (or recent graduate).

  • Applicant should have sound knowledge of current principles, methods, and technologies related to GIS.

  • Familiarity with GPS tools

  • Excellent communication, leadership, problem solving, and analytical skills

  • Applicant should have the ability to write and follow detailed technical information documents as well as being self-motivated and flexible.

  • Must be able to work full time during the summer.
