JOB OVERVIEW: 
The McHenry County Conservation District is currently seeking a GIS Specialist to manage all aspects of the Land Preservation and Natural Resource Division’s Geographic Information System.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Job responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • Create, enter data into, and manage GIS databases using the latest release of ArcGIS.
  • Query and analyze ecological data to assist in guiding management and restoration activities.
  • Utilize GPS for field mapping of biological data and provide GPS training for staff.
  • Develop GIS methodologies that integrate new natural and resource management scientific research initiatives into existing GIS database structure.
  • Create quality maps and prepare information for presentations to District divisions, trustees, the general public, and outside agencies.
  • Assist staff with GIS training and technical trouble shooting.
  • Develop annual ESRI software maintenance contract, and troubleshoot issues with ESRI. 

QUALIFICATIONS:
Qualifications for this position include, but not limited to:

  • Bachelor’s degree (B. A./ B.S.) from a four-year college or university in geography or a natural resource related field with additional advanced GIS training and a minimum of one year of direct experience with ESRI’s ArcGIS for Desktop version 10 or higher or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with professional grade GPS receivers and ArcPad.
  • Knowledge of Midwestern ecological systems, including fauna and flora.
  • Strong preference for a candidate with experience in: Python, R, MS Access, developing web-based cartographic tools, ArcGIS Server/ArcSDE, LiDAR, remote sensing, spatial analysis, landscape ecology.
  • Good attention to detail, strong organizational skills, ability to work independently as well as to lead teams, ability to problem solve effectively.
