Degree and area of specialization:

Bachelor’s Degree in Remote Sensing, Geography, Geographic Information Systems, Natural Resources, or closely-related field required.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

At least one year of experience conducting remote sensing projects. Familiarity with common satellite and aerial imagery data formats, processing techniques, and classification methods. Preference will be given to individuals with prior land cover classification work experience, and basic photointerpretation skills. Programming skills (Python preferred), and Linux experience are a plus but are not required. Other desired skills include statistical analysis including programming in R, Splus, Python or SAS. We are interested in highly capable and energetic individuals who genuinely enjoy doing careful work, will contribute to a team-oriented atmosphere, and are comfortable balancing multiple tasks.

Principal duties:

50% – Land Cover Classification

A. Assist in the processing and classification of remote-sensed satellite data using a variety of tools and techniques under the guidance of the Science Team Leader.
B. Assist team leader in performing quality assurance of input satellite imagery, and output products.
C. Assist in the research and implementation of new techniques to improve the accuracy of the statewide land cover database.
D. Learn field data collection protocols and provide training to field staff as needed.
E. Perform photointerpretation using high and medium resolution imagery to identify land cover training classes.

40% – GIS Data Processing

A. Organize existing ground truth data, and identify areas where additional ground truth sites are needed.

B. Perform standard GIS data management tasks.
C. Integrate GIS data into remote sensing workflows.
D. Generate maps using common GIS tools.

10% – Other duties as assigned

A. Attend and/or present at professional conferences.
B. Participate in project team meetings as necessary.
C. Present interim project results to sponsoring agency as needed.

Additional Information:

The State Cartographer’s Office (SCO) and Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology are beginning a cooperative project to update Wisconsin’s existing statewide land cover database. The goal of the project is to map Wisconsin’s land cover with satellite data using a combination of ENVI, ArcGIS, and open source command line tools. Tasks will include organizing and analyzing existing GIS data sets, extracting new datasets using photo interpretation of high-resolution imagery, database management, and land cover map production.

The work will be conducted at various locations on the UW-Madison campus including the SCO offices in Science Hall, and the Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology. 

The State Cartographer’s Office, a unit within the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has a statutory mission to gather, maintain and deliver geospatial data and information throughout the state, coordinate mapping programs across government entities, and promote new methods and technologies.
