Job Summary:

This position will provide project support to research conducted jointly by the Institute for Applied Ecosystem Studies (IAES), Northern Research Station, USDA Forest Service, in Rhinelander WI and by the Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology at UW-Madison. This position will perform simulation experiments using LANDIS-II (www.landis-ii.org) to investigate interactions between climate change, forest management, rural development, and fire-dependent ecosystems in NE Wisconsin. The incumbent will perform the simulation experiments, including setting up input files, summarizing the outputs (including spatial outputs via GIS software), and performing quality control checks.

Requirements:

B.S. with GIS emphasis in forestry, ecology, geography, environmental studies, or related field, M.S. preferred.  Broad experience with the development and management of GIS data using ESRI ArcGIS, and strong project management skills are required. Experience with scripting and/or programming (e.g., Python, C#, R) and simulation modeling is highly desirable.

Position will be full-time approximately mid-July through mid-December 2014.

 

Location:  Preferred duty station is the USFS IAES Laboratory in Rhinelander, WI.  Highly qualified and independent candidates could alternatively be located at the Department of Forest and Wildlife Ecology at UW-Madison or the USFS Forestry Products Lab in Madison, WI.
