Under general direction, serve as a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) assistant, contributing to ongoing research and teaching activities at the intersection of geography and public health. Current research projects are focused on neighborhood residential environments and health, with an emphasis on the areas of cancer health disparities, green space, and violence prevention. Responsibilities will include spatial analysis, characterization of neighborhood environments using GIS and remote sensing, data management and analysis, writing, and assisting in the development and implementation of a new graduate level health and medical geography course as part of MCW’s PhD Program in Public and Community Health.

 

Essential Duties

In order of importance

  1. Operate specialized computer hardware and software to model, manage, analyze and display geospatial data.
  2. Create, edit, and maintain data sets, including geospatial data and appropriate metadata.
  3. Draft written reports and summaries of data analyses and contribute to peer-reviewed manuscripts and grant proposals.
  4. Train and provide technical support for GIS users and assist in promoting the use and expansion of GIS at MCW through the development and implementation of a new graduate-level health and medical geography course as part of MCW’s PhD Program in Public and Community Health.
  5. Manage Institutional Review Board applications and protocols and maintain data confidentiality.
  6. Code data accurately within established speed requirements.
  7. Review data for consistency, accuracy and quality.
  8. Perform data cleaning and management and resolve data inconsistencies.
  9. Coordinate retrieval of secondary databases. Monitor timeliness of data receipt and resolve issues as required.

 

Qualifications

Appropriate education and/or experience may be substituted on equivalent basis

Education

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Geography, Geographic Information Science/Systems, or related field required.

    • Completion of at least 1 year post-secondary education in Geography, Geographic Information Science/Systems, or related field.

Experience

    • Minimum 1 year of experience working with statistical analysis software (STATA, R), geospatial databases and geospatial software programs, including ArcGIS; 3 years experience preferred.A

    • Experience with remote sensing software (Erdas IMAGINE) preferred.
