This position is responsible for supporting the creation of innovative solutions through the application of geospatial analysis, data integration, and spatial visualization techniques. Working as part of an interdisciplinary team, applies knowledge of geospatial analysis and spatial statistics, mapping, geospatial data integration and management, and application development to recognize patterns, identify insights, and communicate findings related to a variety of business challenges. Identifies new geospatial data sources, integrates diverse datasets using GIS as the integration platform, and serves as the team`s primary geospatial resource.

 

Job Duties

  • Geospatial Analysis (60%)
    • Leads a variety of geospatial analysis projects with a focus on integration of land use, land cover, weather, infrastructure, and property-related data sets.
    • Uses geospatial information as an integration platform for diverse datasets and analyzes geospatial relationships across these datasets.
    • Explores data using a variety of spatial statistics and geospatial analytical techniques to proactively identify relationships, create insights, and answer business questions.
    • Builds the hypothesis, identifies data attributes, and determines the best approach to address the businesses` geospatial analysis challenges.
    • Innovates via new ways of looking at problems, processes, or solutions.
    • Maintains awareness of and connections to leading geospatial analysis researchers and academics.
  • Geospatial Database Creation and Maintenance (30%)
    • Designs and maintains geospatial databases.
    • Sources and integrates spatial data (e.g., shapefiles) as well as non-spatial data (e.g., data not yet geocoded).
    • Develops and manages data quality control procedures.
    • Establishes and maintains strong ties with spatial data providers and others in the geospatial commercial and academic communities.
    • Maintains awareness of leading geospatial techniques, tools, and data resources.
  • Map Creation, Visualization, and Geospatial Application Development (10%)
    • Uses software and scripting to geo-enable large amounts of data from multiple sources.
    • Creates thematic and other maps for reporting and visualization purposes.
    • Develops interactive, map-based applications (e.g., leveraging Google mapping APIs) to support ad hoc analyses and visualization.

 

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience communicating complex findings in a clear and concise manner to non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and maintaining large, geospatial datasets.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and managing geospatial analysis projects and effectively working as part of an interdisciplinary team to accomplish project goals.
  • Demonstrated experience integrating diverse data sources into their geospatial context.
  • Demonstrated experience using relational and other databases, including experience with SQL and SQL programming.
  • Demonstrated experience with Arc GIS and the broader ESRI suite of products.
  • Solid knowledge and understanding of standard and advanced geospatial analysis techniques and tools as well as broader spatial statistics methods.
  • Solid knowledge and understanding of basic ETL (extract, transform, load) tools and techniques.

Education/Experience

  • Advanced degree in computer science, mathematics, statistics, or related discipline.
  • Strong math skills and training with current or emerging skills in machine learning.
  • Professional or academic experience in some combination of the following:
    • Machine Learning
    • Software development
    • Web development
    • IT operations or infrastructure management
    • Cloud infrastructure management
    • Data engineering and ETL
    • Hadoop administration
    • Analytical programming / scripting (R, Python, PowerShell, etc.)
    • Statistical analysis
    • Geo-spatial analysis
    • Data visualization
