The WDNR Water Quality Bureau, Water Evaluation Section assesses the health of Wisconsin lakes and streams by analyzing monitoring data, estimating sources of pollution, and developing tools for implementing practices for improving and/or protecting water quality. The successful candidate will support three efforts in water quality evaluation:

  • Continued development of EVAAL (Erosion Vulnerability Assessment for Agricultural Lands), a GIS-based erosion analysis tool to help watershed managers prioritize efforts to reduce non-point source pollution.
  • Maintenance of water quality assessment data, including the locational information and supporting documentation stored in WDNR’s Waterbody Assessment Tracking and Electronic Reporting System (WATERS) that are reported biennially to USEPA.
  • Modeling of sources of excessive nutrients and sediment in the upper Wisconsin River using linked urban, watershed, and reservoir simulation models.


Duration: Approximately January 12, 2015 to June 20, 2015


Position Duties:

  • 33% – Assist in testing, debugging, and optimization of EVAAL. Contribute to documentation of methods and training internal staff and external partners.
  • 33% – Explore new technologies for streamlining the exchange of Water Quality data between State and Federal agencies in support of Clean Water Act reporting.
  • 33% – Document modeling methodology and publish spatial data using web-based spatial data viewers in support of the Wisconsin River nutrient model.

 

Knowledge Required:

  • Proficiency with geographic information systems (GIS) is required, both in practice and theory. A strong working knowledge of a programming language and/or databases is strongly desired. Preference will be given to candidates who have:
  • Proficiency with either Python or R programming languages
  • Working knowledge of spatial databases and/or SQL.
  • Knowledge of GIS server technology and spatial data viewers.
  • Experience creating publication-quality analytical graphics.
  • Knowledge of hydrology, limnology, and agricultural land-management practices.
  • Desire to use spatial data and modeling to aid in environmental planning.
