Land Cover Field Technician
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is hiring 10 summer field limited term employees to collect field data samples of specific classifications (to species level) throughout Wisconsin to assist in creating the Wiscland 2.0 landcover product.
10 locations statewide TBD including; Cumberland, Darlington, Eau Claire, Green Bay, Oshkosh, Park Falls, Peshtigo, Richland Center, Rhinelander, and Wisconsin Rapids. The job will last until approximately August 28, 2015.
Knowledge Required:
- General knowledge of the distribution and identification of plants found in the Great Lakes Region or Lake States including Wisconsin to family, genus and species.
- Knowledge of natural resource such as biology, botany, forestry, wildlife management, natural resources, environmental sciences, ecology.
- Ability to measure and record survey data and site characteristics of the survey plots.
- Ability to navigate terrain using a map, compass, Global Positioning System (GPS) device and aerial photography in the field.
- General knowledge of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data.
- Ability to participate on a survey team, as well as work alone in the field.
- Ability to interpret maps, public lands survey system (PLSS), legal descriptions, digital raster graphics (DRGs or USGS topographical quadrangle maps), and digital orthophotos (DOPs) in order to identify on the ground survey site locations.
- Must be detail oriented and perform tasks with a high level of accuracy.
- Good organizational skills and ability to work independently while exercising sound judgment. Including ability to independently plan daily travel needs to effectively and efficiently cover assigned area.
- Knowledge of word processing software to produce finished documents, spreadsheet software to tabulate and/or analyze data and email software necessary to communicate with others.
