Duties:
As a Cartographer within the Wisconsin Water Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:
– Designing, developing, and managing online mapping applications.
– Utilizing GIS in performing spatial analyses.
– Guiding overall mapping application design and functionality.
– Coordinating and advising project Chiefs on developing communication, outreach plans, and products for efficient and effective dissemination of USGS science.
– Managing external and internal websites that include design, content development, and integration of mapping and data applications.
USGS has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval. The official worksite for the selectee is the duty location identified in this vacancy announcement. The selectee will typically report to this location on a regular and recurring basis.
Education and Qualifications:
Degree in cartography; or a major that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in cartography and/or directly related science, and related mathematics. Such course work includes, but is not limited to, cartography, astronomy, geodesy, photogrammetry, physical and geological oceanography, computer science, land surveying, geophysics, physical geography, and remote sensing. The 30 semester hours must have included at least 6, but no more than 15, semester hours of college level, non-business mathematics or statistics (i.e. college-level algebra, trigonometry, calculus, or scientific mathematics or statistics requiring equivalent college-level courses as prerequisites).
Applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in cartography which may include: developing and monitoring the production of geospatial data to support agency geographic information systems and hardcopy map generation for a staff unit; working on inter- and intra-agency committees to develop and/or revise Federal standards for geospatial data; revising agency cartographic standards and specifications; providing staff advisory, consulting, and reviewing services; applying standard cartographic practices to new situations and solving novel or obscure problems; exercising initiative and originality in the solution of cartographic problems; and/or serving as a technical authority on all aspects of cartography.
