Job Duties:

This position is responsible for providing complex, statewide epidemiological support for specific chronic diseases prevention and health promotion programs, including Heart Disease and Stroke, Diabetes Prevention and Control, Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity, and others. Activities include, but are not limited to: design, implementation, and maintenance of a statewide chronic disease epidemiologic surveillance system; epidemiological data analysis and interpretation; recommendations for prevention and control measures; technical consultation; project coordination; report writing; presentation of findings; and program coordination and alignment.

The incumbent will be responsible for developing and implementing methods for collecting performance measure baseline, annual and 5-year targets for the CDC State Public Health Actions grant and the Coverdell Stroke Registry grant and others according to grant guidance. The incumbent will also be responsible for working with other program staff to assure that the performance measure data is aligned with programmatic activities to achieve deliverables and desired outcomes.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Extensive knowledge of epidemiological methods for surveillance, prevention and control of chronic disease.
  • Extensive knowledge and/or training in epidemiological application of techniques; investigation skills, drafting survey tools that have measurable criteria, utilizing population selection techniques, analyzing and evaluating data collection and program objectives.
  • Interest and knowledge of public health and/or chronic disease prevention and control.
  • Knowledge of computerized databases, query development, analyses, and data interpretation.
  • Knowledge of statistics, analyses, research methods, and data presentation.
  • Knowledge in utilizing scientific methods and techniques for chronic disease epidemiology for program planning, promotion, implementation, and evaluation.
  • Experience and/or training in the use of statistical methods and computer applications such as Excel, SAS, Access, Arc-GIS.
  • Extensive experience developing reports, briefs, articles and similar materials to disseminate findings to professional and non-professional audiences.
  • Knowledge and competence in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to independently implement data and information objectives of chronic disease programs.
  • Ability to coordinate activities with other staff and professional colleagues.
  • Ability to communicate and cooperate with other individuals, organizations, groups, media, using a variety of written and verbal communication.
